The Spooky Brewing Competition

As the leaves fall each October, the Prairie Homebrewing Companions of Fargo, ND and Moorhead, MN gather together the best homebrew from the best homebrewers to determine who is the 'Great Pumpkin' of brewers.

The Hoppy Halloween Challenge held each year is known for its Medals hung from unique hand-crafted Halloween themed lanyards.

All BJCP categories including mead and cider can be entered, but the Hoppy Halloween Challenge has 2 categories unique to this competition:

Halloween Theme Beer:

"Any beer with characteristics that would identify it as being made for, and in the spirit of, Halloween."  

Fresh Killed Hops Beer:

"A wet hop beer made with fresh undried hops that displays the character of those hops in the flavor and aroma."

Hoppy Halloween Challenge 2021

October 1st thru October 15th


$8.00 per entry of 2 bottles

  • Awards Banquet with winners announced on October 30th,
    Anybody who wishes to attend the banquet must be vaccinated.

  • We will be accepting 350 entries in this competition this year, but with so many variables we felt best raising our cap from last year, but keeping it lower than our historical high. If there is demand and we do not run into any COVID related issues, we may allow more entries than 350.

  • BJCP 2015 Guidelines will be used

  • All BJCP categories of beer, mead and cider will be accepted plus special Halloween Theme and Fresh Killed Hops categories

  • Categories will be consolidated for awarding medals

  • All beers placing 1st, 2nd or 3rd will win a Hoppy Halloween Challenge Medal hung from a special hand-crafted Halloween themed lanyard

  • Special awards will also be presented for Best of Show - Beer, Best of Show - Mead / Cider, Great Pumpkin, and winners of the Fresh Killed Hops and the Hoppy Halloween Theme Beer categories.

Please register and pay for your entries online.  No more sending checks or cash in the mail.  Payment for your entries can now be done online via PayPal, and you don't need a PayPal account either, all major credit cards are accepted.

Hoppy Halloween on BrewingTV

Chip from BrewingTV was in Fargo for Hoppy Halloween 2010 and had a full weekend.  He covered 2 club brews, interviewed Susan Ruud about the club's yeast bank, talked to featured speaker Jamil Zainasheff, and covered Hoppy Halloween judging and awards including Halloween Theme Beer Judging.

Chip had a great time and you can see all the fun he had in Episode 23 of BrewingTV.
